Welcome to the Amateur Investor website.

If, like me, you want your money to work as hard as you did to earn it then I hope you will find this website useful.

And if you’re anything like me you make notes on scraps of paper about why you invested in a particular stock, which savings account is paying the best rate at the moment and which share tips the likes of Investors Chronicle and The Telegraph have published. Scraps of paper which get lost, or eaten by the dog.

So as well as rambling on about investing and saving, this website will be used to store notes and thoughts which I, and hopefully you, will refer back to from time to time.

I am an amateur investor. The information contained on this website is in no way intended to constitute financial advice. Please carry out your own research before using any information within the posts.

If you disagree with one of my posts, then leave a comment. If you agree, then stroke my pride by telling me how great I am 🙂

Above all, take everything I say with a pinch of salt!

  1. I am completely new to this game. I have just opened a low cost SIPP with Best Invest. Do you personally invest in Unit Trusts, Investment Trusts , ETF, or just shares. Would welcome your thoughts. I am very DIY so not much fazes me.

  2. Hi Robert,

Welcome to the Amateur Investor website!

Yes, I personally invest in Unit Trusts, Investment Trusts , ETF AND shares.
I would guess that at the moment the split is 60% Unit Trusts, 30% shares, 5% Investment Trusts and 5% ETFs (but that’s just a guess off the top of my head).
And that doesn’t include my SIPP investing which is mostly Unit Trusts.

So what have you bought within your SIPP, and how do you find Best Invest to deal with?

    1. Thanks for reply. As a complete novice I chose Bestinvest for the research tools. ( they are not the cheapest) . Very impressed. Good analytics.
I have one SIPP for myself and one for my wife. So far 24 UTs with about 22% in emerging markets and 10% in BR gold and SW Gold and Resources. ( We are in the jewellery manufacturing business so knowledgeable.) Question now is which if any IT and ETF; we had already decided to invest 30% in shares.
