Finding an online broker

So first things first. If I’m going to embark on my new life as an amateur investor, I need to find an online broker.

I already have online accounts with Hargreaves Lansdown (for my SIPP) and Norwich & Peterborough Building Society (N&P) for general share dealing, but I’ve decided that I’m going to open a new account with an online broker.

The Hargreaves Lansdown service has been great, but I know that they aren’t the cheapest online broker. And if I’m going to make the most of my money I need to ensure that dealing costs don’t eat away at my capital so sorry HL, but I’m not going to be using you.

I opened the dealing account with N&P last year when they had a special offer of free dealing for a limited time. This offer has long since expired and the dealing fees have reverted to their standard rate. Like HL, I know N&P aren’t the cheapest broker, so I’m not going to be using you either.

So the search has started…
